Scilly mammals
The list of creatures that don't appear in the Isles of Scilly is almost as interesting as those that are present.
The isolation of Scilly means there are very few mammals to be found - no foxes, weasels, stoats or squirrels. This lack of predators is the reason why many other species thrive especially well, and why so many are extarordinarily bold and unafraid. There are no Common shrews in Scilly, but there are large numbers of the much rarer Scilly shrew, which may have originally been a stowaway on a ship from France.
Scilly shrewThe Scilly shrew is a white-toothed shrew and is not found on the British Mainland.
MiceTwo species of mice are found in Scilly, the house mouse and wood mouse.
BatsNearly extinct from the Scilly during the 1980's, they are now making a comeback. Bats can be seen feeding at insect rich hot spots all around the islands.
RabbitThe first historical record of a rabbit in Britain was from the Isles of Scilly in 1176.
HedgehogIntroduced to St Mary's around 1980, without natural predators hedgehogs have rapidly increased in number.
RatsDespite not having the best of reputations, rats are incredibly intelligent allowing them to survive in a variety of environments
Marine mammalsThe Isles of Scilly are visited by a number of marine mammals and is a stronghold for grey seals. These charismatic and popular species play important roles in marine ecosystems and the economy of the islands.
