Herring Gull

Larus argentatus

Probably one of the best known seabirds to be found on any UK seaside location. Whether you love them or hate them, there's no denying that relaxing on a beach in the summer time wouldn't be the same without hearing their call, or seeing them on the hunt for chips!

What many people don't realise is that the population numbers of Herring Gulls have actually undergone massive decline, dropping by more than 50% since 1970. It's difficult to get people to appreciate the herring gull, but if measures aren't taken to secure their future, we may lose that familiar sounds from many of our coastal destinations.
