Who we are How we are funded Serena Pettigrew-Jolly We are incredibly pleased that, thanks to a grant from the Halpin Trust, we have been able to enlist the support of Marie and her Team at Two Green Magpies for a 12 month period. Here's a little bit about Serena and her work. An appreciation of nature was instilled in me from a young age, inspired by family holidays with my grandparents. They were both long-term volunteers for Sussex Wildlife Trust and helped to set up its visitor centre at Beachy Head, Eastbourne. My grandad was a Zoologist and I still have the handwritten list of British garden birds to spot on my kitchen wall, which he wrote for me when I was about 7 or 8. Although my studies lead me to explore English, film and media writing, I’ve always had a love of wildlife and the great outdoors. After university in Southampton and a break for travelling, I somehow ended up in retail management in Dorset, and then banking in Birmingham. These roles were interesting and challenging to a point, but I realised that my calling was elsewhere. I knew I needed to get back to a place with the best and most beautiful coastlines in the world – my home of Cornwall. I was so excited that a volunteering opportunity came up at Cornwall Wildlife Trust around that time. At the Trust I helped in the Marketing and Fundraising Department, initially sourcing raffle prizes and organising a wildlife art and photography exhibition. Luckily, I was taken on as a permanent member of staff and, over the next 10 years, covered all sorts of areas from writing press releases, the website, our magazine, raffles, appeals, media relations, the Trusts’ 50th Anniversary celebrations, staff and volunteer management, Head of Department cover and developing the Business Supporter scheme, to name a few! I was absolutely delighted to be able to tie-up and use all the skills I had learnt from my studies and previous jobs, and to help such a wonderful cause that was very close to my heart. I now have 2 lovely little girls and earlier this year I decided to use the experience I have gained in the charity sector to become a Fundraising and Partnerships Consultant with Two Green Magpies. Working with Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust is a dream, and to be able to use our expertise to benefit and support the awesome work the Trust does is an absolute privilege. I love: Walking the coast paths with my dog, sea-paddling with my kids, and a glass of wine (not all at the same time of course!)I hate: The insane production and discarding of single use plasticsMy favourite Scilly place is: Bergecooth Beach, St Agnes. My family and our friends would take many annual pilgrimages to St Agnes during my childhood. We would camp just next to the beach and I will never forget the night we saw fantastic ocean phosphorescence dancing in the waves, it seemed like pure magic! The animal I would most like to see in the wild: I would love to see a hummingbird, they are fascinating. At the other end of the scale, either a basking shark or a narwhal – to see such iconic and mystical megafauna up close would be incredible.
