Common Tern

Sterna hirundo

<< back

Common terns used to be a regular breeding seabird found on these islands, however their numbers have been declining steeply in recent years. Although they have failed to raise many chicks in the last ten years, they had some success  on one of the uninhabited islands in 2016 and 2017, and we hope that they return for many years to come.

They can be easily confused with arctic terns, though it is unlikely that any would be seen around the Isles of Scilly throughout the summer.
