Common Tern

Sterna hirundo

<< back

What use to be a regular breeding seabird to be found on these islands, they have since become more scarce from year to year. The summer of 2014 was the first time in ten years that common terns had been found to succesfully breed on one of the uninhabited islands, and we hope that they return for many years to come.

They can be easily confused with arctic terns, though it is unlikely that any would be seen around the Isles of Scilly throughout the summer.
